Sonothermal Disc Treatment (SDT) is the next generation of thermal disc procedures. SDT is
performed by means of a High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) probe. A unique
technology that cancels the need for intradiscal device navigation and positioning, an
otherwise challenging task that often results in sub optimized device positioning as well as
outcome during treatment of disc associated pain.
Sonothermal Disc Treatment by means of ULTRAZONIX® SPINE Minimal-Invasive Disc
System is a less invasive intervention for selected groups1 of patients with Low Back Pain
(LBP).
The underlying science of SDT involves targeted deposition of energy within a degenerated
disc to coagulate noxiously stimulated sensoric nerve tissue and to denature disc proteins for
tissue contraction and decompression. The ultimate goal is relief of pain leading to improved
mobility and quality of life for the patient. Pre-clinical studies indicate that, during SDT,
therapeutic temperatures are achieved within the disc up to 10-12 mm from the HIFU-probe2.
Sonothermal Disc Treatment (SDT) performed with the use of ULTRAZONIX® SPINE Minimal-Invasive Disc System is cleared for sale in USA and has CE-mark approval in Europe as a percutaneous procedure.
